I’m Brett Tossell, and I am the Chief Pilot for a family in Newport Beach. I’m reaching out as in addition to managing and flying our aircraft, the owners have requested I oversee their yacht operations as well.
We’re looking for a full time Captain for our owner’s yacht to be based at Bayshore Marina in Newport. We already have the slip.
The vessel is a 2021 Horizon FD92 which we have been running in Florida since purchase. The boat is being transported to the west coast where it will reside in our slip at Bayshore Marina in Newport. It is scheduled to arrive in Ensenada the first week of June – but our Florida crew will be bringing it from Ensenada to Newport.
Ideally – it would be preferred to have our new Newport Beach Captain on board as well to gain a better operational insight and firsthand experience with the crew that has been running the boat up to now. This will allow the new Captain to get an understanding of the care and feeding of the yacht, its quirks, projects in process, and where everything goes.
Our current Captain and crew will return to Florida, and we’ll need a local full-time captain for the yacht to oversee maintenance and upgrades, in addition to operating the vessel.
The yacht will not be used for charters – and will likely have a more relaxed schedule – but as with any new toy – I’m sure there will be a good number of reasons in the first few months to take a harbor cruise or head to Catalina or San Diego for a few days. In the summer, I can see the owners using the boat to host dinners and spend lazy afternoons aboard while the kids take the tender and jet ski’s out to play. I can also see the boss or his grown children using the boat as an office free from distractions from time to time.
In the years ahead, it is possible the boat may be shipped to other destinations as the owners have expressed an interest in cruising Europe and the Med, the Caribbean and Virgin Islands, and the Eastern Seaboard of the US. Any experience in these destinations you can document would be of interest.
The owners have their own chefs and staff – but you may be called on from time to time to source additional staffing in the way of a Mate, Co-Captain, or deckhand as needed by operations.
In addition to operating the yacht – we will need you to oversee cleaning, routine maintenance, supervise any upgrades or modifications, source vendors for any repairs and otherwise help with the ongoing care and operation of the vessel. This will require frequent, and regular time on board.
The yacht and its insurance require a 200-ton license as a minimum. Insurance also dictates the captain must be registered with them and be full time to this yacht with no other duties elsewhere.
For consideration, we will need the following:
1. Captain’s resume
2. Captain’s licenses
3. Written statement of any claims and/or loss history (any marine physical
damage; personal health/medical claims against marine policy).
We would also like your salary expectation or management fees. Any further information or background that can demonstrate your history of operating vessels of a similar size or background that qualifies you would be helpful. We would love to hear from people you’ve worked with and will be conducting a background check to further vet candidates.
I know the above sounds like a lot of requirements, and it’s no small endeavor to gain the trust and assume command over assets like these and be responsible for the lives of the passengers and crew – but I can speak from my experience – these are good people. They’re a warm, friendly, and welcoming family who value long term relationships. I’ve been with them for approaching 12 years now, and I’m very happy to be here. For the right person or group – this is a tremendous opportunity – and one that has potential to last for years.
If you have interest, please open a conversation with your resume and an introduction. Passing that review we’ll reach out and chat with questions, and if things progress, we’ll set up a time to meet. The owners will be brought in for review only after I’ve made my selection – and up until then – their privacy will be respected. This is a competitive process – but the rewards are worth it.
If you have any questions, email me, or call me at (480) 225 8130. I will rely on and be sharing copies of our emailed conversations with our principals – so please keep all salient facts in your emails so they can be referred to as we make our selection.
I look forward to hearing from you and I appreciate your time.
