You have up to 8 weeks to complete the online course starting on the date that TRLMI sends you your course log-in email. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS past this 8-week time frame.
Able Seaman (AB) is a deck rating that requires qualifying experience, exams and approved training. The AB rating you receive will be dependent on your qualifying sea service experience.
AB Unlimited requires 1080 days deck service on Great Lakes or Oceans (including Near Coastal waters).
AB Limited requires 540 days of deck service on vessels of 100 GRT or more, not exclusive to rivers & smaller inland lakes of the U.S.
AB Special requires 360 days of deck service on navigable waters of the U.S.
AB OSV (Offshore Supply Vessel) requires 180 days of deck service on navigable waters of the U.S.
AB Sail requires 180 days of deck service on sailing school vessels, oceanographic research vessels powered primarily by sail or equivalent sail vessels on any navigable waters of the U.S.
AB Fishing requires 180 days of deck service, not as a processor, in any navigable waters of the U.S.
Proficiency in Survival Craft certification is also required by the US Coast Guard in order to obtain an Able Seaman credential.
When you are finished with the online course you will take your proctored USCG Approved final exams at one of our approved locations. Our approved testing locations are currently only in: Alameda and San Diego, California; Honolulu, Hawaii. Upon successful completion of the final exams you will receive a course Certificate of Training that is valid for 1 year to be submitted to the USCG.
Once enrolled, you will receive access to the Online Portal within 2-3 business days via email.
